King of Bollywood
Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema.
ANUPAMA CHOPRA
The defi nitive book on Bollywood featuring Shah Rukh Khan, one of the biggest stars in this booming global film industry.
Here is the astonishing true story of Bollywood, a sweeping portrait about a country fi nding its identity, a movie industry that changed the face of India, and one manfs struggle to become a star. Shah Rukh Khanfs larger than life tale takes us through the colorful and idiosyncratic Bollywood movie industry, where fantastic dreams and outrageous obsessions share the spotlight with extortion, murder, and corruption. Shah Rukh Khan broke into this $1.5 billion business despite the fact that it has always been controlled by a handful of legendary film families and sometimes funded by black market money. As a Muslim in a Hindu majority nation, exulting in classic Indian cultural values, Shah Rukh Khan has come to embody the aspirations and contradictions of a complicated culture tumbling headlong into American style capitalism. His story is the mirror to view the greater Indian story and the underbelly of the culture of Bollywood.
From Bombay Dreams to Monsoon Wedding to Bend It Like Beckham, Indian-themed entertainment has found a vast audience in the US; it is the perfect time for the first major book on the dazzling world of Bollywood.
Bollywood produces as many as 200 films a year at reach 3.6 billion people. Shah Rukh Khan has been the #1 Bollywood star for the past 14 years.
A full-color photo insert will feature the top stars in India, the colorful costumes, and the lush background that separate Bollywood from other fi lm styles.

Ladies first! Anupama Chopra
Film writer Anupama Chopra, who has written books like Dilwale Dulhaniyan Le Jayenge (The Bravehearted Will Take The Bride) and Sholay:
The Making Of A Classic, is all set to release her next book on the life of Shah Rukh Khan.
But what makes her four-year project pleasant is a promise that SRK made to her four years ago — and kept!
Portrait of B-Town
Chopra, who will be releasing her book, King of Bollywood — Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema on September 8, says, “When I started writing it four years ago, he promised that he wouldn’t release his autobiography until after I had released my book.
It was very gracious of him. I’m sure when he made that promise he had no idea I would take four years to write it. His could’ve released his autobiography three years ago!”
Anupama says Shah Rukh started writing his autobiography much before she started hers.
“In fact, he had finished more than half his book when asked me to read it to ensure our topics weren’t repeated in both books. But both are different.
ladies first! Shah Rukh Khan
While Shah Rukh’s is emotional and moving, mine is a portrait of Bollywood through Shah Rukh’s life and films.
Also, mine will be India’s first book to be released by a mainstream American publisher (Grant Central Publishing) and will be released for American readers as well,” says Anupama.
Mellow man
When she first told Shah Rukh about her book, his reaction wasn’t encouraging. “He said, ‘I don’t deserve that much attention.’ It took a bit of convincing and then he was fine.”
Anupama, who is married to filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has known Shah Rukh since the time she went to interview him while he was shooting for Yes Boss in 1996. “It was my first interview with Shah Rukh.”
Has he changed much as a person since? Says Anupama, “It would be presumptuous of me to comment as I don’t know him deeply, but yes, I find him more mellow today. There is a calmness about him but he still has that unflagging energy.”
While Shah Rukh has skimmed through a copy of King of Bollywood and liked it, husband Vidhu has read the entire book. “He liked it too. But I don’t think we can ever be objective about each other’s work!”
King of Bollywood — Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema
The book reveals how Shah Rukh Khan, a middle-class Muslim boy from Delhi, broke into the insular, nepotistic world of Bombay’s show business and emerged a superstar.
His larger-than-life tale takes us through the colourful and idiosyncratic Bollywood movie industry, where fantastic dreams and outrageous obsessions share the spotlight with extortion, murder and corruption.

King’s Biography!!
[23 May 2007]
Shah Rukh Khan, the Badshah of Bollywood, will soon have a full book ‘ King of Bollywood—Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema’ devoted on his life and times in bollywood by the renowned film writer Anupama Chopra. The book will trace the journey of a middle class Muslim boy from Delhi to the super stardom of bollywood beating the nepotism and insular ways of the show business. The book is due for release on September 8 by an American publisher.
As Anupama Chopra says, ‘ My book is a portrait of Bollywood through Shah Rukh Khan’s life and films. Also mine will be India’s first book to be released by a mainstream American publisher (Grant Central Publishing) and will be released for American readers as well. My first direct interaction with Shah Rukh was an interview with him in 1996 during the shooting of Yes Boss. It would be presumptuous of me to comment as I don’t know him deeply, but yes, I find him mellower today. There is calmness about him but he still has that unflagging energy.’
It took Anupama Chopra almost four years to complete the book about Shah Rukh and during this time the King Khan kept patience and waited her to release her book first. In fact, when Anupama was going to start her project, S RK too was writing an autobiography detailing his struggles and times and had even half finished that but did not publish due to Anupama’s book. And now he will publish his own book only after her biography has done its share of business.
However, both the books are different and have been written with a different outlook and methodology. While Anupama’s book is more of an analytical study, Shah Rukh’s autobiography is more of an emotional response to his environment and bollywood’s cut throat ways in general. His book will deal with personal rivalries, friendships, equations after becoming a superstar of bollywood
It may be recalled that Shah Rukh Khan’s wax statue has already found a place among the world celebrities at Madame Tussauds museum in London and now this biography is a further testimony of the soaring popularity of the King Khan. Big B, listening??

Anupama Chopra's book on Shah Rukh Khan
'KING OF BOLLYWOOD’ is a sweeping portrait of a man who is worshipped as a modern-day God, a country finding its identity and a movie industry that helped to change the face of India.
The book reveals how Shah Rukh Khan, a middle-class Muslim boy from Delhi, broke into the insular, nepotistic world of Bombay show business and emerged as a superstar. His larger-than-life tale takes us through the colorful and idiosyncratic Bollywood movie industry, where fantastic dreams and outrageous obsessions share the spotlight with extortion, murder, and corruption.
Mira Nair, director of The Namesake, comments "The ultimate story of the outsider who became Bollywood's great insider. Chopra captures the snap, crackle and pop of celluloid dreams in this immensely readable bio of the great Khan's life...a bounty for cinema lovers everywhere”
Emma Thompson, Oscar winning actor, comments: "The “Easy Riders, Raging Bulls” of the Bollywood industry and essential reading for any Shah Rukh Khan fan."
‘KING OF BOLLYWOOD’ is the first comprehensive narrative account of Bollywood published by a major US publishing house: Grand Central Publishing (formerly Warner Books). The book is being distributed in India by Om Books and Westland Books Pvt. Ltd. Internationally renowned film critic Anupama Chopra combines her knowledge of the Bollywood industry with firsthand interviews and exclusive photographs for an exclusive, insider’s look at Shah Rukh Khan and the world of Bollywood. ‘KING OF BOLLYWOOD’ will also be available in Hindi, Marathi and German translations. The will be released on August 9 in India.
Anupama Chopra is a film critic and book author. She has written about the Hindi film industry since 1993. Her work has been published extensively in India Today. More praise on the book… :clap2:
'King of Bollywood is the all-singing, all-dancing back stage pass to Bollywood. Anupama Chopra chronicles the political and cultural story of India with finesse and insight, through fly-on-wall access to one of its biggest, most charming and charismatic stars,' praises Gurinder Chadha, director of BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM.
'This smart and thoroughly researched book explores stardom - that most of mysterious of phenomena - and in telling the story of Shah Rukh Khan it also shows how a city, an industry and a star can be characters in a single urban epic. Anupama Chopra knows how to blend social analysis with the frisson of glamour and the insider's knowledge of one of the world's great dream machines,' says Arjun Appadurai, John Dewey Professor in the Social Sciences, The New School, New York.
'India has changed more after economic liberalization in 1991 than at any other time in its history. This elegant book is not only an intelligent guide to the charismatic superstar of this era, Shah Rukh Khan, but also to the Indian film industry (Bollywood) and modern India itself. Long live King Khan!' says Dr Rachel Dwyer, Professor of Indian Cultures and Cinema.
'I have always read Anupama Chopra’s books with relish. She has an educated and unbiased approach. Her work is always thought provoking and entertaining. Whoever reads this book will have a clear and insightful understanding of Bollywood and of course, me. Thanks Anu,' says the King Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) himself.

‘Shah Rukh’s stardom is like nothing I’ve ever known’
A widely praised new biography of Shah Rukh Khan by Anupama Chopra, author of Sholay: The Making of a Classic, will be released in India in August. Nisha Susan speaks to the award-winning writer
ANUPAMA CHOPRA
Who gave you the most interesting insights about SRK?
I would say SRK himself! He is by far the most fascinating source and tells the best stories. He is supremely articulate and is a very entertaining speaker.
Does your book overturn received ideas of SRK?
The most prevalent perception about SRK is that he is a bigger star than he is an actor. My book cannot overturn that perception, only a movie can! That notion about Shah Rukh has been a singular note in his career right from his theatre days with Barry John. Despite people laughing at him, his friends making fun of him, that style has been constant. His friends would say, aaj chhath ko uda diya! What was interesting for me was how he used that over-the-top, highly energetic style and transformed it into global superstardom.
Your book starts at an unlikely place — in a small town in Georgia — with an SRK fan who dreams one night that he is dancing with SRK.
I heard bizarre stories about SRK fans everywhere, over and over again. There was one moment with SRK that I will never forget. It was in the rural outskirts of Chandigarh during the production of Veer-Zaara. The scene needed a pastoral setting. The unit had just arrived in this field and I stepped into the makeup van to chat with SRK. We spent an hour talking. Then we came out of the van. First, I stepped out, then SRK followed me. I was suddenly hit by this strange, very loud sound. It was frightening. When I had stepped into the van the field had been empty. Now there were 400 people chanting SRK’s name. It was surreal. More so because I had been sitting for an hour with SRK with very little sense of talking to God. There was none of the old-style megalomania of stars about Shah Rukh. I had forgotten that this guy is worshipped. His stardom is like nothing I have ever experienced. Being around him is nonstop entertainment.
What did you yourself most want to know about SRK?
I wanted to find the ‘X’ factor in the whole SRK phenomenon. Obviously, there really is no key to explain how he arrived where he is or who he is. There is no single factor to explain why he, who to many is a mediocre actor and a mediocre looker, is the face of post-liberalised India.
What is the one thing about SRK that few people know?
I didn’t know that his first movie role was in Arundhati Roy and Pradeep Krishen's In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones. I could not believe it. I dug up the movie and watched him in it and keeled over laughing. There he was, in three scenes, just one of the crowd. He was quite hurt about not landing a lead role in that film.
Does he remain elusive to you or do you now feel you know him well?
SRK will always be elusive to me. SRK is fiercely intelligent. He reveals only what he chooses to reveal. He will only tell you what he wants you to know. There are spaces in his life in which someone like me would never be admitted
Your book explores SRK, the city of Mumbai and Bollywood. How has SRK shaped Bollywood?
I think SRK has shaped Bollywood enormously. I think his presence and the work he did with Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra structured 90s Bollywood. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge was a watershed moment in terms of the overseas market, stories and how characters were shaped. Then he picked up Karan Johar who was Aditya's assistant director and they did Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which was another watershed moment. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai transformed the style, the costumes, the look of Hindi films. Shah Rukh is the face of New Bollywood. When I first started reporting on Bollywood even in the early 90s, most of the directors were men in their 50s. It was still a cottage industry and quite unprofessional. SRK and the directors he worked with had a lot to do with changing that.
What is your favourite Hindi film?
My all-time favourite still is Sholay. For people from my generation there is nothing like Sholay and no one like Amitabh Bachchan. That reverential low-angle view we still reserve for Mr Bachchan.
Finally, did SRK stop you from writing up specific stuff on him?
Never. He never told me what to write or what not to write. He made it clear from the start this was going to be my take on him.

The maddening thing is that we are made to wait for the US edition (on Amazon.co.uk, the price is listed in $ first) :curse: and not for a specific European edition.
My only hope, but with age I'm turning delusional, is that the delay is due to the joint offer of SRK's own book but after an umpteenth visit to the Harper Collins website, I'm less and less hopeful as the Book list remains a sad blank.

I fiddled with the delivery option, went back to my original choice, i.e as few deliveries as possible and guess what: I have a new earlier dispatch date for A. Chopra's and the other books I had ordered :) while Shah Rukh's book has been put on the side for later delivery.
C'mon mate, time to finish writing the damn thing! :waiting:
I got it from Barnes and Nobles...you just need to check your nearest store on their website.
Easier said than done, B&N is an American chain of bookstores, and Anna, Elly and me hail from various parts of Europe, as can clearly be seen in our posts.

When SRK's dad wanted to act
Piyush Roy
Posted online: Friday, July 27, 2007 at 0000 hours IST
And you thought you knew all about Badshah Khan! Come August 9 and someone would reveal all those untold secrets of the 'cocky star', who has attained a kind of 'thairav'.
I haven’t penned 70,000 words gushing on Shah Rukh Khan,” is how film critic and author Anupama Chopra sums her latest book, King of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema.
Yes, yet another biography on SRK hits the stands on August 9. But Chopra, who counts this as her third book on cinema assures this one is different, “It’s an exploration and introduction to the Hindi film industry through the life and times of Shah Rukh Khan.”
Incidentally, the idea of the book was planted within Chopra much before the release of the other books on the actor.
“When I was working on my book on Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge for the British Film Institute, I really got fascinated by Shah Rukh and the way he has shaped contemporary Bollywood. My book on him grew out of that. It is a critical evaluation of his impact on and contributions to the Hindi film industry,” she says, adding that her biggest challenge was structuring the book as “it takes on the big picture of the film industry and India, while simultaneously portraying a detailed picture of the man. It starts from the pre-partition era in the Peshawar galli, where his ancestors hailed from and which was also home to Prithviraj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar and ends with Bollywood occupying a global space.”
Chopra, however, assures that there still are many unknown facts about the much-written actor that people will get to know in her book.
“For instance, I didn’t know that Shah Rukh’s father too for a small period did come to Mumbai and tried to become an actor and that Shah Rukh’s first film was in which Annie gives it those ones made by Arundhati Roy and Pradip Kishen in 1988,” says the author, who as a film journalist has interviewed Khan for over a decade.
“He was just one of the crowd in most scenes and played a character called Senior in the film set in an architectural college,” she informs.
Ten years hence, she observes a kind of “thairav” in the “cocky” star. “He is less cocky than what he was when I first interviewed him in 1996. But he’s still quick on the uptake and always guarantees great lines,” she sallies.
Quiz the film critic on that one SRK film that could be called a contemporary classic and she “undoubtedly” picks DDLJ. “It has a certain innocence with a warm heart. It’s not a manipulative film and is an honestly told story. That’s why it still connects with people. That apart the whole Raj-Rahul series too is going to be representative of our films from a particular era in years to come,” she says.
So has SRK given his nod to the bio? “He is very supportive but I can’t definitely call him my best friend. As regards the book, he has read parts of the manuscript and hasn’t asked me to change a single line,” signs off Chopra.

Mine's from Amazon uk has been moved to 7 August, i.e 3 weeks earlier than previously. Who did you order from?
Got my delivery notice today, after another phone call (which included the person from amazon claiming that they would never deal with later orders earlier than the ones who came first, in spite of us having at least two examples to the contrary - do they think we are fools, or what?!?). Anyhow, the book is on its way, my friend got hers today, and amazon.de has after our second phone call today which dealt with the price successfully lost a customer after eight years.
Thanks for the article, the book sounds more interesting with every article I read.

Did you order other books with it? Mine remained stuck on 28 August because I also pre-ordered Twenty Years of a Decade (Shah Rukh's book that we might see in a decade... :P)
What I did: I went into the delivery option, selected change and then chose my initial option "As few deliveries as possible" and as a result my order was re-arranged with a new date and Shah Rukh's book put aside for later delivery. Even if you have only the one book, try fiddling, it may work. :)
