Star wives break free

Leading members of Bollywood’s First Wives Club appear to have had enough of being party circuit arm candy and running little businesses on the side.
Led by first wife Gauri Khan, they’re now striking out on their own. Khan is set to host First Wives Club, a television talk show and she has roped in big name wives and girlfriends to sit down with her for an on air conversation in front of a studio audience of married women.
Up until now Khan’s involvement in the industry in which her husband is the undisputed king, has been low profile. This first stint in front of the camera will take her off page three and into being an entertainer in her own right.
Also stepping from behind the shadow of her more famous husband is Twinkle Khanna, who also debuts on the small screen in a show called Makeover with Twinkle Khanna on a new channel called Colour.
Other news, that Suzanne Roshan is also toying with a big budget foreign television series, may be mere rumour as new mum Suzanne is right now wrapped up in her second go at motherhood.
Gauri’s entrance onto the small screen is, not surprisingly, funded by her husband’s production company, Red Chillies Entertainment. This show, which will also mark the company’s debut into television, will feature many of her and Shah Rukh’s friends.
“The opening episode will have Farah Khan and Kajol as the special guests. However, the studio audience will comprise married women from all walks of life,” says an executive producer from the production house.
Other friends who will feature on the show include Mehr Jessia Rampal (Arjun Rampal’s) and Maheep Kapoor (Sanjay Kapoor’s wife).
Twinkle Khanna meanwhile is pitched to exploit her eye for design and colour in a female-oriented show that will feature Twinkle sharing tips on makeovers that every woman can be part of. “Be it home, or style, the show will offer interesting and handy tips,” says a source from Colour.
Suzanne Roshan is also rumoured to be in talks with Discovery Travel and Living to host a show on homemaking.
Another star wife who looks set to carve up a piece of showbiz pie is Kiran Rao aka Mrs Aamir Khan. Kiran, after assisting chhote (that’s what she calls Aamir) in Taare Zameen Par, is now concentrating on her own film.
“It’s very different. She wants to shoot it in a very.. guerilla way… on the road with just five people,” said Aamir.
Shobhaa De once famously said that “a typical star wife should be blind, dumb and deaf.” She’ll have to come up with something new now.
