Roshan Abbas will make his directorial debut for Shah Rukh Khan
By: Shaheen ParkarDate: 2008-12-16
Mumbai:

welcome aboard, abbas! Gauri and Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan will produce Roshan Abbas' directorial debut, a youth-centric flick

Roshan Abbas will make his directorial debut with a project for Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Productions.

The anchor/presenter had always harboured aspirations of being a film director and had even done a course during his student days at the Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi.

Says SRK, "Yes, Roshan has submitted a script and it is a fun film. He has been part of several of my stage shows. By January, things will be clear. I am waiting for the current situation to improve before making any announcement. We want to produce big projects with directors like Anubhav Sinha and Farah Khan.

At the same time, there are also plans to roll other quicker projects like what Roshan has in mind. I have an office and a staff strength of over 40, we have to keep it going."

It is learnt that Roshan's film will be a youth flick with six characters three girls and three boys. The script has been close to Roshan for long and when he narrated it to SRK, the latter loved it.

Says a source, "Over two months ago, Shah Rukh called Roshan to his office for a narration and things started rolling. Auditions for the various roles have already begun at the Red Chillies office at Bandra. Roshan's jewellery designer wife Shaheen has also been involved."

Adds the source, "The film, yet untitled, is about high school students. Ever since Roshan had staged a play Graffiti in New Delhi in the '90s, he had desired a similar subject for the big screen as well. There are several B-Town films about college students but there are no projects that take on high school students. Roshan is keen to explore those years in his subject."

Roshan, a name synonymous with radio, television and stage shows, says, "Yes, I do plan to direct a film but right now, the project is in the discussion stages. I will get a clearer picture in the coming weeks."

Oh oh, I already see the JTYJN comparisons. I liked whatever I saw of Roshan Abbas on television years back in India (except when he started hosting cricket shows) and I am sure this will be a fun movie, if not funny. Red Chillies is a serious brand now, and I'm sure Shahrukh will not associate himself with any project that is not worth the effort.

lol I thought of Ishq Vishk actually...but hmm may be interesting since they're doing high school kids.

I used to love Roshan Abbas in Family Fortunes. Hope he can do something useful for Red Chillies. And I am cool with SRK not acting in the movie.

This Roshan Abbas project doesn't seem economically viable. That's just my opinion, though.

And why would that be ? ?

When's the last time there was a film evolving around teenage actors, that ended up being successful?

If its something like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, then it might be definitely worth watching and "economically feasible"

Whoa, SRK to launch Zoa!

Morani daughter to debut in a youth flick backed by Khan

shaheen@mid-day.com

Shah Rukh Khan's shows are exclusively managed by the Morani brothers (Karim, Ali and Mohammed). This decade-long bonding now goes a step further. Zoa, daughter of Karim Morani, will make her debut in a film to be produced by SRK'S Red Chillies banner. The youth-centric flick marks the directorial debut of anchor Roshan Abbas.
Under wraps
Says a source, "The project is under wraps and those associated with it are keeping mum till it rolls. But Zoa has been signed."
It is learnt that keeping in view the close relations the Moranis have with Shah Rukh, Karim has finally agreed to let his daughter step onto the big screen in SRK'S production. The actor who is now recuperating at home post his surgery, is slated to hold discussions about the various aspects of the project soon.
Zoa studied at the Jamnabai Narsee School at Juhu and did her junior college from Mithibai. She is now pursuing a degree through correspondence.
As reported ('Roshan to direct for SRK'; Hitlist, December 16), the film is based on Abbas' play Graffiti which was staged in New Delhi in the '90s.
Apart from Zoa, another Morani who has had a brush with acting is Mohammed's wife Nasreen, better known as Lucky. She featured in their musical City Of Dreams staged last year.

I became a very obedient child

That’s how Zoa Morani convinced her dad, film producer Karim Morani, to allow her to act

By Vickey Lalwani
Posted On Friday, April 03, 2009 at 02:43:33 AM

Karim Morani

Zoa Morani’s cup of joy is brimming over. Not only has she fulfilled her dream of being an actress and bagged a launch vehicle produced by Shah Rukh Khan, but she has also succeeded at convincing her father Karim Morani, a renowned Bollywood producer, to come around to her choice of profession.

Though Karim Morani has produced umpteen successful Hindi films like Damini (1993), Raja Hindustani (1996) and Arjun (1985), he was still averse to the idea of his daughter being a Bollywood actress.

21-year-old Zoa, who is currently elated at being signed for a film co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan and the Moranis and directed by Roshan Abbas (anchor), recollects her struggle to get acceptance from her dad. She begins by informing us about her protective upbringing. Zoa said, “I belong to a very conservative family. So much so that even today I cannot go out for late nights, unless I am at a very close friend’s house. I am also expected to leave specific details of my outings with my friends like where I am and what time I will return home.”

Zoa had cherished the dream of being an actress since she was knee high, but of course no one took her seriously then. But when she disclosed her career choice to her family, especially her dad, it created ripples. She admits, “Initially, my dad was not too happy with my decision to be an actress.”

Zoa Morani

Though Zoa had to struggle to get things done her way and her determination was tested many times, she succeeded finally, thanks to her mother, Zahra, who was her pillar of strength. Zoa revealed, “My mother played a big role in convincing my dad that I should be allowed to realise my dream.”

To convince her dad, Zoa decided to get her message across in the most subtle manner possible. She said, “I became a very obedient child at home. I would follow his instruction to the T but was stuck on my demand to be an actress. Eventually, he saw through my firm determination and agreed that I should get behind the scenes to begin with. I became an assistant director to Rajkumar Santoshi for Halla Bol for a few days. Later, I was the last assistant director to Farah Khan for Om Shanti Om. Meanwhile, things started falling in place and my father not just allowed me to be an actress but is also co-producing my debut film.”

Once, Zoa got a green signal from her dad, she enrolled in Anupam Kher’s acting school to get her basics right. Thereafter she did a three months training with the famed theatre actor Barry John (who has tutored SRK). The once pleasantly plump Zoa is heavily into a workout regime where she practises yoga for one and a half hour religiously.

Now that the storm is behind her, what is her father’s advice to her? “My father had advised me to keep my head on my shoulders and be cautious of the company I keep. I will be consulting my father at every stage in my life. As regarding intimate scenes, I will not do anything that will upset or embarrass my parents.”

Zoa’s debut film is expected to hit the floors later this year.

Co-produced? :hmm: This was supposed to be a small budget film, wasn't it? Why two producers? Oh well, if the burden is shared, nothing better. Though it splits the profits, it reduces the losses also :)

Straight drive into films

Mumbai: Most star kids in India follow their father's footsteps. However, former Indian cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi's son Angad Bedi decided to tread a different line. A self-confessed Amitabh Bachchan fan, Angad decided to try his luck at the movies. His perseverance paid off as he's doing pretty well for himself in Bollywood.

"Earlier, my life revolved around cricket. I played for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy, the U-19 team and even county cricket in England for a few years. But there was a side in me that wasn't a keen cricket fan. That side loved watching movies," he says.

He adds: "I never told anyone that I wanted to act. But during my schooling and college days I did a lotof theatre, attended acting workshops and took part in elocutions too. The feeling to take up acting grew stronger when I realised that though I was playing well for my side, I was getting dropped. My father is a very outspoken man and so there were people who did not like his views. There was too much politics in cricket in Delhi and I took the decision that I should try out what I longed for."

Angad, who is also a model, says it was his feat on the ramp that got him the necessary attention. "I did JJ Valaya's show and the show was a hit. My photos were splashed in newspapers with the headline 'Bishan Singh's son debuts on the ramp'. A film-maker named Sashi Kumar approached me to act in his international film (Kaya Taran) based on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and I worked with Seema Biswas. The film went to Venice and Cannes and that's how it all started," he says.

"I'm working hard and I'm very happy to be in Mumbai. Here, there's no politics and moreover I'm out of my father's shadow. No one is comparing me to him here. I have to prove myself and I know I can do that by working diligently," he ends.

Angad's doing it
Twenty-five-year-old Angad Bedi reveals that he has signed a three-film deal with Suniel Shetty's production house Popcorn Entertainment. He is also currently filming for Joy Augustine's movie The Little Godfather. We learn that he has also auditioned for Shah Rukh Khan's forthcoming production to be directed by Roshan Abbas. Film-maker Amole Gupte has also shown a keen interest in him.

Small town, big dreams
Abhilasha Ojha / New Delhi July 11, 2009

Radio old-timer Roshan Abbas tells Abhilasha Ojha of the downslide in the medium, his show on TV and his big plans to enter films.

I still remember listening to your show Live Wire on radio when I was in college. What do you think of the medium after all these years?
When I began shows on the radio, more than a decade ago, the medium was very open to experiments. We were there to try and offer new stuff to listeners. Live Wire, where people called up and interacted with just a voice, was a brand new concept. Today, despite so many channels, there’s a lot of clutter. Everyone’s doing the same thing; no one is trying anything different.

You have a new show on Sony TV called Palampur Express that you’ve written and produced. It isn’t the typical kitchen drama and it does not have zany camera moves. Do you think it’ll succeed?
(Laughs) The initial response has been good and the feedback from viewers is to make it grittier. The story is based on a girl from a small town who is a fantastic runner and who hopes to bring home an Olympic gold medal one day. We are focusing on her journey, on the politics of sports, and how a small-town girl tries hard to make a name. To my mind, it’s the first time that sport as a genre has been introduced in an Indian serial. (Pauses) I think it will continue to appeal to viewers because it’s time to get “real” on TV.

So, it’s Chak De! India on Indian television?
(Laughs) Chitrashi Rawat, who essayed an important role in Chak De! India, in fact, asked me to make this script for a film and promised to do it for me. But I wanted it to be a serial because I wanted to focus on the journey of a small town girl with big dreams. As for films, I have other plans.

Such as?
Red Chillies (Shah Rukh Khan’s production company) and Cine Yug will be producing my film which is based on Graffiti, a high-school musical of sorts that I’ve directed earlier. I’m going to be in Delhi next week for auditions. We hope to have it released early next year. My company is also working on two non-fiction shows besides continuing work for Palampur Express which is a daily.

Soon, SRK in a flick on social networking

From virtual to reel, the Facebook fancy of our film folks goes a step further, as Shah Rukh Khan gears up to produce and act in a movie on the popular social networking site.

The film is produced by Khan's Red Chillies Productions in association with the Morani Brothers of Cineyug, and marks the directorial debut of TV anchor and radio personality Roshan Abbas. Confirms Mohammad Morani, "We are coming up with a film on Facebook and similar social networking sites in collaboration with Red Chillies, and Shah Rukh might act in it. The talks are still on"

The film is based on Abbas play, Graffiti - Post Card From School, which deals with the problems of teenagers and adolescents. Zoa, daughter of Karim Morani, also makes her acting debut with the film. Zoa has been working as an assistant with directors like Farah Khan and Rajkumar Santoshi. She was seen in a bit role as one of the aspirants for the Shantipriya lookalikes in Om Shanti Om.

Roshan Abbas' film for Red Chillies tentatively titled Always Kabhi Kabhi

A few months ago, we had told you about well known theatre personality and radio guru Roshan Abbas making his directorial debut with a film for SRK's production house Red Chillies Entertainment. While Roshan is all set to take his film (tentatively titled Always Kabhi Kabhi) on floors he is quick to dismiss the rumours that the film will also star Shah Rukh Khan.

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Roshan said, "No...SRK is just producing the film. My film stars four fresh new faces, one among them is Zoa (daughter of Karim Morani) who is making her debut with this film. We are still finalizing some of the cast members and as of now have some known names too like Archana Puran Singh, Satish Shah etc. playing vital roles."

Roshan is also quick to dismiss rumours that his film is based on the popular social networking site Facebook. "See...as I have said earlier, the film is an adaptation of a play I had written and directed way back in 1999 called 'Graffiti' about life at high school. That play was set in '99 and this film is set in 2009 so it's but obvious that I would be having some elements which the youth of today connect with one of them being social networking sites such as Facebook. However, beyond that there is no real connection. The film is set in a high school and will try to capture the various emotions such as love, jealousy, pride that one goes through during school days. I believe some of the best days of our life are the ones that we spend in high school and it is this period of one's life that the film will portray."

Shooting of the film Always Kabhi Kabhi is scheduled to commence in mid-November at various locations across India. Pritam has been roped in to compose music for the film.

Shah Rukh Khan takes it easy

Mumbai: For the first time Shah Rukh Khan will not be acting in his home production. His production house is planning a film titled Always Kabhi Kabhi that marks the directorial debut of industry veteran Roshan Abbas. The movie is a launch pad for four new faces including Zoa Morani the daughter of Karim Morani, a family SRK is very close to for years.

A source said, "Shah Rukh wants his role to be only that of a producer this time. This is a big exception because he has produced eight movies so far and in all of them he has either had the lead role or did cameos."

The insider added, "He will supervise the shooting, marketing and advertising plans and will also be creatively involved with the movie by going through the script and suggesting things that he feels would be beneficial for the project. Since the movie will star Zoa, he will make sure that she gets a big launch as the Moranis and he go back a long way. The Moranis are his friends and they manage his stage shows."

Shah Rukh's busy schedule is apparently limiting his involvement in the film. "Shah Rukh has My Name Is Khan and then Ra.1 up his sleeves. Ra.1 is also being produced by him; he is really tied up. So he is taking it easy as far as this movie is concerned. He just wants to oversee things than act in it. However, his presence even as a cameo would have made a world of difference but Shah Rukh is confident of the product and Roshan Abbas's film-making skills."

Rachana, Glamsham Editorial

Radio jockey, anchor/ presenter, host, theatre artist, actor Roshan Abbas, is all set with his directorial debut, ALWAYS KABHI KABHI, made under Shahrukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment. However, it's hard to believe that Shahrukh has not yet seen the film.

Roshan says, 'He has seen only bits and parts of the scenes as the compilation and process of film is too big. The good part of it is he has never been judgmental on it. We are making a fresh attempt on behalf of Red Chillies to come out with a different film. He gave me suggestions but he never ever meddled while working. All he said was you like it use it.'

Roshan, who has known Shahrukh for over years now, says SRK has a good grip over audience pulse. He is elated to have worked with a producer like Shahrukh Khan.

'He has done 71 films so his experience his huge. And Shahrukh's understanding of the audience is uncanny. He knows the audience well. He would hear a phrase and say it will work or not. He's never been authoritative. I wish I have all the producers like him. He not only gave me all the freedom to do what I wanted but also gave the freedom to make mistakes (laughs),' says the debutant director with full gusto.

He further praises Shahrukh style of working. 'I learnt a lot from him. He has been absolutely wonderful. His suggestions were there when we were at scripting stage but then he left us to what we wanted. Shahrukh always gave us a freehand which I really appreciate,' signs off Roshan says in a cheerful tone.

SRK is the busiest person: Roshan Abbas
IANS, Feb 22, 2011, 12.09am IST

Roshan Abbas More PicsActor Roshan Abbas, who is making his directorial debut with " Always Kabhi Kabhi" under Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment banner, said the superstar has some unique promotional ideas up his sleeve.

"His involvement is there but he is also shooting for two movies. He has 'RA.One' on one side and 'Don2' on the other, but in the midst of these, his support is always there and you will get to see some unique Shah Rukh ideas as we go along," Abbas told us in an interview.

Shah Rukh is in touch with his office from Malaysia, where he is shooting for "Don2", said Abbas.

"Currently, he is in Malaysia. But he has seen the marketing plan of the film. He is continuously in contact with Red Chiiles because he wants to know what we are doing, what our ideas are to promote the film. He has also given us some ideas," said Abbas.

"Once you see the posters, which would be out soon, you will see how the Red Chillies' look and feel has come into this film," he added.

Abbas also said he regards Shah Rukh as his mentor.

"He has always been around on the sets. He is the busiest person on this planet. Even in the middle of that, he used to find time for my film. That's what makes him really interesting. He was there as a mentor in that sense, but he has not been a tormentor," Abbas laughed.

Set in a high school, "Always Kabhi Kabhi" captures the emotions of love, jealousy and pride that marks one's school years.

"It's an adaptation of my play about a high school 'Graffiti', which I earlier wanted to turn into a graphic novel," Abbas said.

SRK wants 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' to be controversy free
By: Mauli Singh Date: 2011-02-22 Place: Mumbai

Shah Rukh doesn't want any controversies rocking his next production, a teen flick

Shah Rukh seems to have had enough of controversies. He is making sure that his forthcoming next Roshan Abbas' directorial debut Always Kabhi Kabhi doesn't get into that space.

Though the film is about Delhi school kids and is based in the capital city it has stayed away from talking about an infamous MMS scandal. Roshan says, "We haven't delved into the MMS territory.

Roshan Abbas (in the red hat) on sets

We wanted to make a feel good youth centric film. One of our writers had also suggested incorporating the Valentines Day controversy where a few couples were banned and beaten up but we refrained from using any such scandalous incidents. I know films like Dev D talked about it but ours is in a very different space."

Roshan informs that his producer Shah Rukh Khan was very clear from the beginning to make a positive film on today's youth. "Shah Rukh and I had a lot of discussions during the scripting stage.

His point was 'lets concentrate on the positives. This generation is the hope of the future lets keep the hope of it alive.'

He wanted the audience to leave theater with a smile He said Red Chilles is known to make wholesome family entertainers and I fully value his opinion and I guess that will also help us getting a wider audience."

He describes the film as "a simple, sweet coming-of-age story about today's youth and communication gaps they face with their parents and how they resolve it."

The movie is based on Roshan's play Graffiti which he had staged in New Delhi in the '90s and is talks about high school students and stars newbies Zoa Morani (daughter of Karim Morani of Morani Bros who handle SRK's shows), Satyajit Dubey (grandson of theatre stalwart Pandit Satyadev Dubey), Giselli Monteiro (she played Harleen in Love Aaj Kal) and Ali Fazal (played suicide victim Joy Lobo in 3 Idiots).

"SRK gave me the canvas I wanted" - Roshan Abbas
By Taran Adarsh, March 1, 2011 - 08:40 IST
Radio Jockey. Television host. Theatre person. Roshan Abbas is wearing a new hat these days, that of a director. For those unaware of what Roshan has been up to, well, he's giving finishing touches to his directorial debut - ALWAYS KABHI KABHI - which is produced by none other than the superstar himself, Shah Rukh Khan. Surprisingly, the project in question doesn't star SRK in the lead, but four new faces - Satyajeet Dubey, Aly Fazal, Giselli Monteiro and Zoa Morani.

It all began while a show in Dubai, featuring SRK and hosted by Roshan, got delayed. "We got talking. He asked me what I was doing and I replied that I was planning to start a film on teens, with freshers enacting pivotal parts. It didn't require the presence of big stars, but it did require a big production house to back it. We met again in India, had our round of discussions on the project and he stepped forward to produce it." Prior to that, Roshan was in preliminary talks with Ritesh Sidhwani and also with the people at Studio 18, but as luck would have it, Roshan's directorial debut was destined to be produced by SRK.

ALWAYS KABHI KABHI is based on Roshan's 1999 play 'Graffiti'. "But it took time to develop it into a full-fledged screenplay. Shah Rukh pointed out two things. One, cinema and play are two different mediums and the written material had to be more cinematic. Two, it had to be contemporary. Also, I'd like to clarify, though the film revolves around teens, it's not inspired by 'Archie'. It actually borrows from real life experiences," Roshan divulges.

Did SRK offer suggestions, give inputs, recommend actors? "But he never imposed his ideas/suggestions," he interrupts, "He'd say, this is what I feel about a particular thing/issue/person, it's up to you to accept it. He gave me the freedom to make the movie I had envisioned and visualized at the outset. He gave me the canvas I wanted," he adds. Was it tough giving shape to his dream? "Not really! Initially, I wondered, will I get the grammar right? Will the cinematographer translate my vision on celluloid? But it wasn't tough. All you need is the right atmosphere to translate your ideas on celluloid," Roshan reveals.

Roshan's dream will unfold on the big screen on 17 June this year. "I have truly enjoyed the experience of making ALWAYS KABHI KABHI. And I wish to continue chasing my dream," he smiles. We're equally sure Roshan, you will have many interesting stories to tell in times to come.

Shahrukh likes Saif's girl
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, March 03, 2011] 2 Comments

She played a meek and nice 'sardarni kudi' in her debut film 'Love Aaj Kal' (2009). However a couple of years down the line, Brazilian beauty Giselle Monteiro has taken a leap forward. From playing a suit-salwar clad Harleen Kaur, she has gone through a complete metamorphosis by turning ultra glam for her second film 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'.

"After watching 'Love Aaj Kal', it was Shahrukh who suggested the film's director Roshan Abbas to have a look at Giselle. Though the first time director was apprehensive about her being cast in a role that required her to be someone who would make heads turn with her glamorous persona, Shahrukh insisted that he consider her for an audition at the least," says a source attached to the film.

The results were there to be seen as Giselle showcased a different facet of her persona in the audition.

"She turned someone totally opposite to Harleen. Gone was the entire coyness and what she brought to fore was a glamorous side of hers which was fantastic," says Roshan, "It was a new Giselle that everyone saw and she was pronto brought on board. There was no reason why we would have let her go."

"Shahrukh didn't want actors to ape him" - Roshan Abbas
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 04, 2011] 0 Comments

One thing that the makers of 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' were clear about from the very beginning was that the focus of this campus entertainer would stay on the young ones which comprised of actors like Zoa Morani, Giselle Monteiro, Ali Fazal and Satyajit Dubey.

"It is their film and this is how 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' would be rightly projected", says Roshan Abbas, the director who makes his debut with the film, "In fact I remember an instance when I was narrating the film to Shahrukh Khan. He suddenly started enacting a scene in his own manner. However he didn’t want any of the kids to see what he was doing as he wanted them to bring their own grammar. He didn't want them to ape him."

While each of the actors eventually brought to fore his/her own style, from the creative perspective both Shahrukh and Roshan were convinced that 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' had to take an out and out commercial route.

"That was a given", smiles Roshan, "I come from space of cinema which is commercial with songs and dances. The difference that we wanted to bring in though was that all of it had to be a little more believable. Today's cinema is anyways evolving and being real is the in thing. Of course you can have those huge glamorous sets but eventually I wanted them to live in their own existence. They couldn’t be fake."

Well Roshan, we hope the film actually turns out to be just that i.e. an absolute original and believable sans anything which is fake.

Aamir's boy loses it for Shah Rukh

By Joginder Tuteja, March 4, 2011 - 15:11 IST

He was the perfect fit for Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots. However, when it came to making a transition to Shah Rukh Khan's Always Kabhi Kabhi, Ali Fazal had to really struggle and in the process lose it all. For the uninitiated, Ali is the same boy who played the memorable part of Joy Lobo in Hirani's masterpiece.

"In Aamir's film, Ali had a minor though important role to play. It's his suicide that resulted in Aamir's first serious confrontation with Boman Irani. Post 3 Idiots, Ali was recognised but no one ever looked at him as a hero material. This is the same time when auditions were taking place for Always Kabhi Kabhi. Someone referred Ali to director Roshan Abbas who was hosting the auditions", says a unit member from Shah Rukh's production team.

What followed next was a complete disaster as Ali walked in while carrying the same persona as that of Joy Lobo. It was apparent that he was still not out of his earlier mould and was severely under-prepared for the role of a leading man that he had to play in Always Kabhi Kabhi.

"Naturally, Roshan rejected Ali in a single go", informs the source, "There was no way that he could have even continued with Ali. For his film Roshan wanted a boy who had to play the part of a school teenager. On the other hand, Joy was continuing with his rock star looks with flying locks, stubble and the works."

He was pronto sent back but Roshan's female assistants persisted with him to give Ali another chance. Resultantly, the first time director relented and summoned him again, only to brief him about the part and what he expected from him in their first formal audition.

"Though Ali did listen to him patiently, his body language didn't seem promising enough for Roshan to wait longer. He continued his auditions with other youngsters and forgot all about Ali", the source adds.

There was a miracle in store though with Ali going through a complete transformation two months down the line.

"The first thing that I noticed was that he had got rid of his stubble and locks. Thank goodness for that as we could at least talk now", laughs Roshan when asked about the incident, "He had also lost 10 kgs and now looked like a dream. Of course he cleared his auditions after giving a good account of himself in both the looks as well as acting department."

One wonders whether building muscles would be next in agenda for Ali after he moves from Aamir and Shah Rukh to Salman.

Shahrukh wants to plug the generation gap
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, March 07, 2011] 0 Comments

For his debut directorial outing 'Always Kabhi Kabhi', film maker Roshan Abbas must have thought that his play 'Graffiti' (which he had written and directed way back in 1999) was a good enough ready material for the screen adaptation as well. However that was not to be the case as Shahrukh had slightly different view around how he wanted the written material to come on screen.

"Shahrukh was quite nice and polite to Roshan and in fact complimented him for being 'ikhlas' (an 'Urdu' word which stands for being sincere) in his thinking," says a source from the film's production unit, "However he advised him to change the 'sur' of the script a little so that it appeared younger."

The film is said to be a coming of age campus entertainer with youngsters like Giselle Monteiro, Zoa Morani, Ali Fazal and Satyadev Dube forming the film's cast. To make sure that these youngsters spoke the same language as the youth of today, Shahrukh wanted Roshan to further work on the film's dialogues.

"Shahrukh had so many examples to narrate where kids in his own family had an altogether different way of talking and behaving. It was an eye opener," says Roshan, "In fact he and I joked that our generation had long been left behind."

Hope this generation gap doesn't reflect in the final outcome.

Little did actor Haarsh Nagar know that he will be debuting in a film produced by his idol, Shah Rukh Khan. The new talent, discovered by Red Chilies Entertainment, is all set to make his big debut with Always Kabhi Kabhi that also stars Ali Fazal, Giselle Monteiro and Preetika Chawla.

“Though I come from a background in law, acting has always been on my mind. I completed four acting courses, took dance lessons from Shiamak Davar ane even learnt Korean martial arts — Taekwondo,” says the 21-year-old actor, son of lawyer Bharat Nagar who happens to be the legal adviser to actor Amitabh Bachchan.

Talking about this offer, he says, “I was offered a TV show produced by Yash Raj Films two years ago, but I was keen on films. I happened to meet one of my friends in Mumbai who is into film branding. She asked me to register for the auditions for Always..., which finally became my debut.”

Nagar recalls, “Auditions are usually about monologues and this one too was on the same lines. However, they asked me to enact a scene... like a drunkard. Though I don’t drink or smoke, I pulled it off quite well. That’s how I got the role.”

So, has he had the opportunity to meet his idol yet? “Oh yes, I did! I have grown up watching his movies and never imagined that I will debut in a film produced by his banner. The feeling of meeting your idol on the first day of the shoot is unimaginable. Shah Rukh is an institution, there is so much to learn from him,” he says. So wasn’t he apprehensive being part of a multi-starrer film for a debut? “As long as your role is good, you will be noticed by people,” informs the actor.

Nagar also plays the lead role in a French production, Queen, directed by Arnaud Selignac, that releases this June. “This project came about while I was doing my film course. Since I knew French, it was an advantage. The film dates back to 1700s and is about a French girl falling in love with an Indian boy,” says Nagar.

No 'Mohabbatein' situation for 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Friday, March 11, 2011] 0 Comments

When Roshan Abbas started working on 'Always Kabhi Kabhi', he was sure that for his teen campus musical entertainer, her wanted the focus to stays on the young characters enacted by Zoa Morani, Giselle Monteiro, Ali Fazal and Satyajit Dubey. This when he had Shahrukh Khan for a producer and if required, he could have reached out to him for a cameo, if not a special appearance, in the film.

Roshan doesn't deny though that having Shahrukh in the capacity of an actor did cross his mind. "There is an obious temptation to rope Shahrukh Khan as an actor when he is anyways there with you as a producer. However the more I thought of it, the more I felt that by playing any of these three roles, he would have been wasted."

Didn't he ever feel though that for a film centred on teenagers, he could have ensured added visibility for all involved had Shahrukh Khan too featured as an actor? After all he could have increased the role of a supporting actor and hence ensured that Shahrukh was present for much more than just 20 minutes.

"Well, that would have been unfair to the film," reasons Roshan, "Also, the entire focus would have shifted from the kids to Shahrukh. Remember 'Mohabbatein? Though there were six young actors in the film, the entire attention was always on Shahrukh. When you have someone of his stature in a film, the others are bound to get compared to him. That's not something that any of us wanted."

Shah Rukh hosts special screening for Always Kabhi Kabhi
By Joginder Tuteja, March 16, 2011 - 14:21 IST
Guess some of the good habits of Aamir Khan are rubbing over Shah Rukh Khan as well. It is a known fact that Aamir Khan hosts special screenings for practically each of his films prior to their theatrical release. Now Shah Rukh too has done the same for Always Kabhi Kabhi, a film coming from his production house which is directed by Roshan Abbas.

Informs a source closely attached to the film, "Yes, there were a couple of test screenings that were held a few weeks back. Unlike many film makers who host special screenings only in Mumbai, Shah Rukh took the film to Delhi as well. He wanted to gauge reaction from the two biggest audience bases for his campus entertainer."

The test screening was held for hundreds of students and youngsters who belonged to 14-24 year age group, which is also the film's target audience. This is not a first in Bollywood though as Aamir has done this for each of his films, whether it is 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par or even nephew Imran's Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa.

"The idea is to closely monitor audience reaction and see which are the scenes that are the highest as well as the lowest points in the film's narrative. Roshan was quite involved in both these screenings and took notes so that he could go back to the editing table and make necessary changes, if required", continues the source.

Roshan doesn't deny that these screenings indeed took place. "I had shown Shah Rukh some portions of the film to understand if we are reaching out to the audience we had in mind", he says, "I was also of the view that we should show the film to sample of such audience. Shah Rukh too converged on my point of view and we went ahead with the screenings."

Since the film's final edit was not yet done, Roshan and his team set expectations with the audience.

"We told that that the film that we were showing them was a rough cut and yet to be polished in totality", says Roshan, "To our delight though, the audience was pretty involved with what they saw and later commented that the film was reflecting their own story. They laughed with us at the right spots and then went quiet when the story touched their hearts."

Well Roshan, hope the wider audience too shares a similar thought.

The war continues...
Four years after the OSO-Saawariya face off, SRK and Sanjay Leela Bhansali to clash once again

Kunal M Shah

Posted On Monday, March 21, 2011 at 03:20:16 AM

Diwali 2007: Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya clashed at the box office.

History is going to repeat itself this June 17, when Khan’s home production Always Kabhi Kabhi and Bhansali’s production My Friend Pinto releases on the same day.

However, this time around, SRK and Bhansali are just the producers of their respective films unlike four years back.

A source recalled for us, “SRK and Bhansali were close friends and when their films clashed in 2007, SRK had said that he would try and speak to the director.

Once the clash was inevitable, both of them started a media war. Incidentally, Farah Khan said that if Bhansali would make Om Shanti Om, he would name it Maa Shanti Maa.

This irked Bhansali no end. Hence, started a series of interviews where Bhansali showed his displeasure towards SRK and Farah. In fact, he even went on to say that he was not excited to see Om Shanti Om.

Salman Khan, who was good friends with SRK around that time, said that he would be promoting OSO and SRK replied saying, if Bhansali asks, then even he would promote Saawariya.”

This time around, Always Kabhi Kabhi will mark the directorial debut of Roshan Abbas and cast that includes Zoa Morani and other newcomers.

This will contrast with Bhansali’s My Friend Pinto having an ensemble cast, with Raghav Dar making his debut as an actor. Let’s see who wins round 2.

SRK shoots music video for Always Kabhi Kabhi
By Bollywood Hungama News Network, May 3, 2011 - 12:08 IST

There is no denying that Shah Rukh Khan is among the busiest actors around, what with his film commitments, his IPL commitments and numerous other endorsement related work. Even as he is neck deep busy travelling with his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Shah Rukh managed to squeeze out time to shoot a music video for his home production Always Kabhi Kabhi directed by Roshan Abbas.

Always Kabhi Kabhi, produced by Red Chillies Entertainment, stars relatively new faces such as Zoa Morani, Giselli Monteiro, Satyajit Dubey and Ali Fazal. To see that the film gets its due share of eyeballs, the makers decided to shoot a special music video featuring SRK along with the cast of the film. The song called 'Antenna' features in the climax and is set against the backdrop of a jail set with some rebellious lyrics describing how parents' frequency many-a-times doesn't match with that of their children.

Famous choreographer duo Bosco-Caesar choreographed the song and King Khan air-dashed from Kolkata straight to the sets, quickly practised his steps and was ready for the shoot. Post the shoot, SRK once again had to return to be with his KKR team for their next match. Surely here is one actor who is always high on energy!

Looks like Shahrukh Khan will be coming to the rescue for a lot of people this year. He is already playing a super hero in the much awaited movie Ra. One and now he will be seen vouching solely for the kids in a song in his forthcoming production Always Kabhi Kabhi.

The song 'Antenna' will appear in the climax of the movie. The song has a back drop of a jail, where the kids are shown as the prisoners and the parents as cops, who control them. But along comes Shahrukh Khan and frees all the kids from the jail house.

Shahrukh will be donning an entirely silver look, with silver jacket, belt, shoes, etc. The song has a rebellious tone showing the generation gap between the kids and their parents, which is what Always Kabhi Kabhi is about. The superstar will be seen rapping and hook dancing in the song.

Taking time out from his IPL schedules, Shahrukh, completed the shoots for the song in a few hours. This song was shot in just one day. Amazingly, the actor learnt the steps of the song in an hour. Choreographer Ceasar (Bosco and Ceasar) told Mid Day, “Shahrukh came straight from the airport, practised his steps for an hour, shot with us till 2 am and then flew back again. He didn't leave the set once except to change outfits. They were simple steps. SRK said he was okay with whatever I said."

Now we can be sure that Shahrukh Khan does not compromise his work for play.

Shah Rukh Khan turns singer and lyricist.

After displaying his vocal skills in the song "Apun Bola Tu MerI Laila" in " Josh", Shah Rukh Khan is once again crooning in his home production " Always Kabhi Kabhi".

Sources in Bollywood say that SRK has also contributed as a music composer and penned down few lines for an item number in his next film. SRK will also feature as an item boy for the same track which was shot at a lavish set in a suburban studio April end.

Red Chilies' film titled, "Always- Kabhi Kabhi" has been by anchor, radio jokey turned ad maker Roshan Abbas and the music is composed by Pritam Chakrobarty.

Sources say, "Both composer and filmmaker were stuck when SRK walked in and within no time the creative enzymes in the actor started following and a melody was conceived.
Shah Rukh also added some punch lines in the song giving it his trademark edginess".
"SRK is so spontaneous and lyrically strong that whenever we were stuck in a tune he instantly contributed with his creative inputs," says music director Pritam who has also worked with the actor during the making of "Billo".
The director Roshan Abbas concludes, "As you are aware SRK is immensely talented and has contributed in the production of the said item song. Pritam and I were hunting for a good track and it was SRK who created magic for us".

yeah that wasn't a good promo either. Everything just looks so fake and cheesy. And I dont' think that works anymore. It may have worked in the 90s or something- and even then only with a big star.

Mohabateein suffered the same problem, but that was saved somewhat cause of the awesome acting by SRK and Amitabh Bachchan, their on screen 'chemistry' was what made the movie and the dialogues were memorable.
This doesn't have that advantage.

It's not going to be good for SRK if this film flops, and that's where its heading at the moment.
Especially with all the money spent on Ra One, last thing SRK needs is to lose money.
Also won't help his credibility either.

I feel really bad for him. I hope despite it looking bad, the movie is a small success at least.
Perhaps the script appeared better when he read it.

Once again, I liked the song. However the slickness of the look is its problem. The audience at whom this is targetted, doesn't like this. They want to see ugly looking actors mouthing maa, behen kis in dirty locations, with a generous dose of ch****, ga*** etc and sex thrown in. This is definitely not what they want to see.

That might be one section of the target audience, but not all. And it certainly won't be the reason this movie fails (if it does).
That's just a typical excuse to give.
The slickness isn't a problem, the cheesiness is.

Well, that's what teenagers do... they don't go out and start singing songs in school ;)

One reason why Band Baaja Baarat worked is because guys could relate to the character of Bittu. He was so real. A typical Delhi guy. That's what college guys do. Whatever this film is showing, it's not real at all. Maybe for the posh kids.

SRK didn't impose himself on 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Wednesday, May 18, 2011] 0 Comments

'Always Kabhi Kabhi' is close to Shahrukh Khan's heart, especially so since this is the first teen comedy that he had made ever since he turned producer.

"He was all there for the film," says Giselli Monteiro, the film's leading lady, "In fact right through the making of the film Shahrukh did have suggestions for all of us actors. However he used to pass them on to (director) Roshan Abbas who further helped us with our scenes."

Giselli is right here as Roshan too has confirmed how Shahrukh used to record videos of certain scenes and share them with him so that he could educate the gang of boys. The intention was not to copy Shahrukh but to catch nuances of acting.

"That's true," she smiles, "I am told that Shahrukh didn't intend to impose himself on us or inhibit us with his presence. He wanted us to be plain natural and be on our own rather than worry about what he thought of our performance."

'Always Kabhi Kabhi' releases all over on 17th June.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who has transcended geographical boundaries and won hearts of millions with his charismatic screen presence, says he doesn't consider himself a star.

"The reason I say I am not a star is because I am completely human. I still cry, I still laugh, I crack jokes, I get stressed, I feel disturbed but I think you people love me so much because I could be human," he told reporters Wednesday at the music launch of his latest production Always Kabhi Kabhi, releasing June 17.

"Even though I have this pedestal where I stand which says I am a big star but actually I am nobody till I work hard to make you smile," added the 45-year-old.

To give a Midas touch to the film, Shah Rukh has appeared in a promotional song of the film Always Kabhi Kabhi.

"It's not an item number. It's the beginning of the film. The music and the lyrics of course make it a peppy number," he clarified.

This directorial debut of Roshan Abbas is also launching two new faces - Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dubey. Actor Giselle Montario of Love Aaj Kal fame and Ali Fazal who did a small role in Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots play lead roles in the film.

Set in a school, Always Kabhi Kabhi is about four unique youngsters trying to compete with pressure of growing up and many firsts that everyone experiences in high school.

As today's school life has changed a lot, King Khan could hardly identify with any except the determination of the youths to accomplish their goal.

"The youth part of the film is the same as it was in my time, but the way they deal with their life has changed. There are many things in the film that I have not done in my school life. So there are many things I couldn't identify with," said Shah Rukh.

"Life has changed so much. But the thing that the film says, follow your dream, I could easily identify with. I never thought that I would come to Mumbai and do so much of work but yes I always aspired to be an actor or a sportsman. The film also shows that we should do something that I am willing to do instead of choosing the way where I can lead an easy life," he added.

Bhansali postpones film for SRK

Reshma Kelkar Dabholkar, TNN | May 21, 2011, 06.28pm IST

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has postponed the release of his forthcoming film My Friend Pinto from June 17 to July 1st.

His film was clashing with Shah Rukh Khan's home production Always Kabhi Kabhi.

According to an industry insider, Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently saw SRK's dance number Antenna from the film and that made him rethink about the clash. He immediately decided to postpone his production My Friend Pinto from June 17th to a further date.

Now Bhansali doesn't want to take AKK for granted especially after watching SRK's awe inspiring number. Perhaps he wants to avoid the disastrous deja vu when Om Shanti Om and Saawariya clashed on the big screen.

However, SLB now has stronger contenders. His film will now release with Delhi Belly and Big B's Bbuddha Hoga Tera Baap.

We wonder of Sanjay will go for yet another re-scheduling for My Friend Pinto.

Shah Rukh was presented with graphic version of Always Kabhi Kabhi

By Joginder Tuteja, May 24, 2011 - 12:34 IST

Shah Rukh certainly likes to put his directors into some 'testing times'. In case of Always Kabhi Kabhi first time director Roshan Abbas presented the story to him as a rom-com graphic novel before it could be approved for conversion into a feature film. Now this one could well be a first in Bollywood because though it is a common practice to have an idea being presented as a show-reel or a pictorial illustration, there has never been a situation when an entire graphic novel is put together before being pitched for production.

"Shah Rukh wants his films to be different but then also commercially viable. That's something he has learnt since the days of his earlier productions like Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Asoka and Paheli, none of which worked at the box office. He doesn't go ahead and give his nod of approval for a film just on the basis of a well sounding idea. He wants something much more than that; like a prototype which gives him an exact sense of what the final film would look like", informs a trade source who has closely followed Shah Rukh's stint as a producer.

Another thing that Shah Rukh is quite clear about is that even though he may be having quite a few friends in the industry who are most willing to work with him, he chooses only those who manage to impress him with their homework, are well prepared and quite clear about what they want.

"He has worked with the likes of old friends like Farah Khan (Main Hoon Naa, Om Shanti Om) and Aziz Mirza (Chalte Chalte) but that never meant that he wasn't open to other options", continues the trade source, "It's an idea that matters and hence when Anubhav Sinha approached him for Ra. One and Roshan Abbas presented to him the synopsis of Always Kabhi Kabhi, he gave them a go ahead to flesh these out further."

Many were surprised though because Anubhav came soon after Cash while Roshan hasn't made a film before. Also, SRK and Abbas have never been known as his thick friends unlike Farah and Aziz who were a part of his inner circle. So while Anubhav went on to spend more than a couple of years just on getting his writing and other pre-production activities right for Ra. One, Roshan too got busy with getting the visual representation of Always Kabhi Kabhi in place so that he could convince Shah Rukh to make the film.

"Yes, it was a challenge for me to see the idea to Shah Rukh and for that I did present a graphic novel of Always Kabhi Kabhi which visually described the spirit of the film", confirms Roshan, "I sketched out a large part of the film to show what it would eventually look like. Since I had the screenplay pretty much ready, I went to him with the right scenes instead of selling something which was in thin air. There was a definite plan in place and once Shah Rukh liked what I had to say, I explained how this novel would further translate into a full blown film. Of course he liked what he saw and bringing the floor from that point on wasn't tough."

No sleaze for SRK, please
He objects to certain lyrics in Always Kabhi Kabhi but is amused to find out that the lingo is common currency among the youth

That Shah Rukh Khan wants to steer clear of controversies was evident when he met director Roshan Abbas and music director Pritam to discuss the music of SRK’s production Always Kabhi Kabhi. Incidentally, Shah Rukh had a problem with the phrase Undie the condi, which is used in the song.

hah Rukh told Abbas that he was not happy with the lyrics and the song sounded sleazy. Abbas explained that it is only a shortform of the phrase that the youth use for ‘Understand the Condition’. Shah Rukh needed to be further convinced, and so Abbas showed Shah Rukh the research papers.

Roshan Abbas said, “I was telling him about the songs, when this discussion started. He asked me ‘why are we doing this and what does it mean?’ Shah Rukh was of the opinion that we should not use words like ‘undie’ and it sounded like kundi, which means bum in the South. I told him that this is actually a phrase which people use in North India.

They use the phrase ‘Undie the condi of the situ’, which means ‘understand the condition of the situation’. I also pointed out that this was, in fact, a popular phrase in school in the North and it has been passed down many batches now.”

Abbas added, “Since the film is about youngsters and targets youngsters, we have used many phrases like JFI which means ‘just forget it’ and PAW, which means ‘parents are watching’, etc, although I have not used PAW in my film. The kids do use these phrases and SRK was stunned and said, I know that today’s generation says some weird things, but this is really different.”

'Genius' Shahrukh knows what the audience wants
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, May 28, 2011] 7 Comments

Not many are aware that Shahrukh Khan knew his 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' director Roshan Abbas since their theatre days together in Delhi. More than two decades back, Roshan was Shahrukh's junior in theatre and the first time director has been impressed with the 'baadshah' of Bollywood ever since then.

"There are two things that I find incredibly tremendous about this man. One is his focus and another is his creativity," RJ turned filmmaker shares his own reasons behind such high regard that he holds for Shahrukh Khan, "He is someone who always looks for what audience wants. This isn't something which is coming to him today; he has been like that forever."

Narrating an example of his creativity, he adds, "I remember how after he became a star, we did some chat shows together. At times we didn't even have a script in hand but he still managed to do things impromptu. I used to ask him a few things and he used to reply to them in his characteristic funny manner."

The same creativity ran into the making of 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' as well. Once the script was locked, cast finalised and production plans put together, work also began on how to present the film to the audience.

"Shahrukh came up with some brilliant ideas at the very inception of the film," says Roshan, "He is a genius."

With Giselle Monteiro, Ali Fazal, Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dubey in principal roles and also starring Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey, Vijay Raaz, Mukesh Tiwari and Manoj Joshi, 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' releases all over on 17th June.

O God, kids really talk like that?????????? Why such laziness to complete the words. Its ridiculous. They get used to all this then have trouble creating simple official mails at work.

Shah Rukh Khan takes the time to get it right
Published: Monday, May 30, 2011, 11:18 IST
By Soumyadipta Banerjee | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

While today’s newcomers are jittery after five retakes, superstar Shah Rukh Khan stunned everyone on the sets by rehearsing 20 times before giving the final shot in front of the camera! Apparently the incident happened while Khan was shooting for a special song for hisforthcoming production, directed by Roshan Abbas, that also stars producer Karim Morani’s daughter, Zoa.

“The actor surely gave the newcomers a lesson on perfection while shooting for a song in which SRK makes a special appearance. He asked the director for the lyrics and kept on rehearsing with the choreographer until he got the steps just right. Amazed to see Khan do continous rehearsals, the newbies were in complete awe of him!” says a source from the unit of the film, who was present during the shooting of the promotional video.

The young actors, who were all new to the ways of the industry didn’t utter a word as Khan kept asking for more and more rehearsals because he felt that he was not getting the steps right.

“The kids were awe struck watching Khan rehearse — they wondered where allthe energy and enthusiasm came from and how he managed to focus on the task ignoring all the distractions, even after so many years. It was then thatRoshan told them that this was the trait of a superstar,” the source added.

When asked, Roshan said “Shah Rukh’s keenness to learn the lyrics and the steps had the kids spellbound. They got to see what goes behind making a superstar, first hand. I was shocked to see the energy and vigor they came out with after this experience.”

I totally get that.
And even I never expected this to actually be realistic. It is a light hearted, feel good movie, so it makes sense that it will have some 'escapism'.
And it obviously can't be dark and gritty.

But this is really too fake for my liking. The people all look plasticy.
The lighting especially is very bright and really weird- I mean what's with the pink tinge to everything
I think it would actually hurt my eyes if I had to watch this movie in a theatre, and it was that bright the whole way through.

I have seen other 'escapist' movies from bollywood, but didn't feel like this about them. They still looked real. Even if the story wasn't realistic and the characters larger than life. I"m talking about literally the look of this film, not the story or characters.

But anyway, if you like it, that's good. I hope more people feel that way. I want this to do well for SRK's sake.

Dialogue promos......not so good IMO. The jokes content may be in keeping with the times but the effect is one of the 70s. Teacher throwing chalk at the student to get her attention, overacting etc. I've seen all this in the 70s movies. We laughed then. It's stale now.

@ agantuk - you got me wrong. I wasnt talking about the escapism aspect. I totally love light hearted movies, with too-good-to-be-true characters.
But this one looks a bit too 'polished'.

Like KKHH's first half was pure escapist cinema - people dont break into random dance routines, and act like that in colleges. But it was awesome, because the characters seemed real on screen. Here, its like they have come out of a Barbie-doll factory or something - all with the 'chubby cheeks, rosy lips, dimpled chin and teeth within' :P

But to each his/her own - if you love it, then its great for you :D

Is Shah Rukh being taken too lightly?

By Joginder Tuteja, June 4, 2011 - 16:59 IST

When Shah Rukh Khan announced plans for his production Always Kabhi Kabhi, he would have expected that no one would dare release alongside his teen romantic comedy set in a school campus. However this hasn't quite happened, what with as many as half a dozen other films vying for attention on the same day, hence resulting in a crowded situation. This has also raised a pertinent question around whether filmmakers in the B-Town are willing to take a risk by being no more scared of the competition, despite Shah Rukh's name involved.

"It is surprising to see that despite Shah Rukh announcing Always Kabhi Kabhi for 17th June release way in advance, there are three notable films - Bheja Fry 2, Bin Bulaye Baarati and Bhindi Baazaar Inc ready to take it heads on", says a trade source, "This is not all as three small time films like Chitkabrey - The Shades of Grey (an art house affair), My Husband's Wife (seemingly a C grade affair) and The Green Chic (an animation film) are line as well. This is shocking."

Of course most of the aforementioned films would be seeing a small release for themselves with only Bheja Fry 2 proving to be a good competition.

"Bheja Fry was a huge hit and there is a tremendous recall value that the film carries", a source adds, "The sequel is bound to take a positive opening. It will certainly not be a pushover despite Shahrukh doing well with his marketing and promotion team ensuring good visibility and release for Always Kabhi Kabhi."

Bin Bulaye Baarati may throw in a surprise as well, what with 'Shalu Ke Thumke' enticing audience in the single screen belt, courtesy Madame Sherawat. On the other hand Bhindi Baazaar Inc boasts of a terrific set of actors and its hard hitting promos have hinted that this could be yet another Yeh Saali Zindagi of the year.

"You still can't deny the fact that Shah Rukh Khan has been an undisputed 'baadshah' for at least a decade now. When he stands up, everyone follows. Rest assured, he will get the best screens and show timings for Always Kabhi Kabhi", says an official at a premier multiplex chain, "Of course even Shah Rukh would have preferred to arrive sans any clutter as there is good competition from a film or two. I see Bheja Fry 2 as the biggest challenge of them all."

Roshan Abbas, director of Always Kabhi Kabhi, is undeterred. "This isn't a formula film we have made. In the times when films like Tanu Weds Manu, Band Baaja Baaraat, Udaan and Phas Gaye Re Obama are making waves, Always Kabhi Kabhi couldn't have been better timed."

One wonders whether others in the competition bear similar sentiments.

Giselli wants to say 'thanks' to Shah Rukh Khan
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Monday, June 13, 2011] 0 Comments

Giselli Monteiro is dying to spend a few minutes with Shah Rukh Khan and say 'thank you' to him in person. Reason? The 'baadshah' of Bollywood trusted in her abilities and roped her in for his home production 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' despite the fact that she had done just one film before.

"Can you believe it that I couldn't get much opportunity to interact with him during the making of 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' since he himself was so caught up with 'Ra. One'? I have been told by Roshan (Abbas), the film's director, that it was Shah Rukh who spotted me in 'Love Aaj Kal' and wanted me for the film. I now want to spend a few quiet moments with him and say a big 'thank you'," says Giselli in an animated tone.

In 'Always Kabhi Kabhi', Giselli plays a NRI from London who has lived abroad for most part of her life and is now in India to pursue her further studies. This is in sharp contrast to her role in 'Love Aaj Kal' where she played a 'desi sardarni'. Since the Saif Ali Khan film had happened around a couple of years back, one wonders what made her hold on for so long before giving a go-ahead to 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'?

"Honestly speaking, there were opportunities but at that time I wasn't feeling too comfortable to go ahead and pick up something immediately," confesses Giselli, "In any case I was still learning the language and wanted to be much better in my next outing. So I took a break, went home and then returned when 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' came calling."

And how about future plans?

"I am not in a hurry," she smiles, "I like to do things with my heart and not just for the sake of it. There are certain things in the pipeline and hopefully I would soon be able to talk about them as well."

'Always Kabhi Kabhi' sounded like a good idea due to it being a Shah Rukh Khan production and boasting of a fresh cast. However the songs haven't worked and the promotion too has lacked zing. Arrival amidst the crowd would further reduce footfalls, hence leaving space only for 20%-30% opening.

Shahrukh Khan does it for young actors!

Shahrukh Khan doesn’t want to steal the attention away from ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ actors

There’s a reason why Shahrukh Khan has been keeping a low profile about his production Always Kabhi Kabhi, starring a host of young actors.

The movie, slated to release this Friday, introduces Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dube and features Giselle Monteiro and Ali Fazal. Shahrukh Khan has just an item song ‘Antenna’ which will not be used in the film.

Shahrukh Khan, we hear, has deliberately kept himself out of this film because he doesn’t want to steal the attention away from the young actors.

Roshan Abbas, the film’s director, says that Always Kabhi Kabhi is essentially a youth film. And though that doesn’t mean Shahrukh Khan has become ‘old’, his presence in the film would have tilted the balance away from the young actors.

“Let’s face it, if we have Shah Rukh in the film, he will automatically become the centre of all attention,” Abbas is quoted to have said.

Shahrukh himself has agreed to let the young actors take the lead in promoting the film. The badshah surveys it all silently from the shadows.

That was really silly (if its true). If they're not going to have the song in the film, they never should have shot it. But to have shot it and not include it is just ridiculous. Now the people who may have gone to see the movie for that reason won't either. Plus there will be those who get angry because they saw the movie expecting a song, but got disappointed.

I agree with him that the attention should be on the movie and younger actors, but in that case he shouldn't have appeared in promos either.

Youngistan rules! Bollywood has realized the potential of this segment of moviegoers -- the teen market -- which explains why movie-makers are attempting to wow Gen-X with films that appeal to their sensibilities. Actually, the social networking generation can make or break a film in a span of minutes. It is this aspect that keeps a storyteller on his/her toes. Unconventional, out-of the box themes, but contemporary by nature are being attempted. Luring the youth to cineplexes is the prime motive of the film fraternity today.

Coming of age films aren't new. But there's definitely a dearth of movies that look at school students. Mansoor Khan's JO JEETA WOH SIKANDER stands tall in this list. First-time director Roshan Abbas attempts to mirror the lives of four youngsters in ALWAYS KABHI KABHI, Class XII students all. Today's kids have a mind of their own and ALWAYS KABHI KABHI makes an attempt to make adults realize what goes on in a kid's mind. Bridging the generation gap, did you ask? Oh yes! Making adults -- parents, teachers, elders -- understand the kids better. The intentions are right, but the interpretation isn't.

ALWAYS KABHI KABHI is based on Roshan Abbas' 1999 play 'Graffiti'. Though Roshan may claim that he has developed and modified the play to suit the moviegoers' tastes, the fact is that the subject material is thoroughly unexciting and comes across as a hollow attempt to drive home a message. Actually, the screenplay tries to pack too much stuff, but the manner in which everything is spread out on the table makes you squirm in your seat. Seriously, one wonders after a point, what were the director and his team of writers trying to say? The writing is not merely humdrum and dreary, but also amateurish and ridiculous at the same time.

Moreover, the director knows not how and when to conclude the film. For, the movie goes on and on and on... it tests your patience, after a point. Too many songs are forced in the narrative, the relationship between parents and kids is handled most haphazardly [it paints the parents black!], the theatre portions are insipid and boring and the conclusion, which could've been a solid wake up call for parents of teenagers, fails to strike a chord. ALWAYS KABHI KABHI just doesn't work!

Four students of St. Marks School. Each one going through a difficult time in his/her life due to enormous expectations from their parents. Tariq [Satyajeet Dubey] is expected to be a topper... Sameer [Ali Fazal] has to arrange for money after he's cornered by two corrupt cops... Ash [Giselle Monteiro] has an over-ambitious mother who's keen that she join ad world/movies… Nandini [Zoa Morani] is someone who has a major attitude and it stems due to her relationship with her parents.

How they overcome all odds and make their folks realize the folly forms the crux of the story.

Like I pointed out at the outset, the intentions may be right, but the writers haven't been able to translate their thoughts well on paper and also on celluloid. I must add, despite the shortcomings, Roshan Abbas has executed a number of sequences well. Also, Roshan gets the casting right and each one of them makes an earnest effort to deliver natural, likeable performances.

The songs are are a mixed bag, with the sole exception of 'School Ke Din' at the outset. Cinematography is eye-catching.

Giselle Monteiro, who made her debut in LOVE AAJ KAL, gets ample screen time here and though she's awkward at places, she has handled a few moments well. Satyajeet Dubey, the geek, is a complete natural and makes the most ordinary sequence watchable with his effortless performance. Zoa Morani, playing a spitfire rebel, reminds you of Kareena's 'Poo' act from K3G. She makes a confident debut! But it is Ali Fazal who's the showstopper, who pitches in a super performance and stands out at the end of the day.

Lillette Dubey, Navneet Nishan, Manoj Joshi, Mukesh Tiwari and Satish Shah are passable. Vijay Raaz gets no scope.

On the whole, ALWAYS KABHI KABHI disappoints!

Raja Sen feels Always Kabhi Kabhi is dull in the first half while the second half explodes into a flashy climax that ruins everything.

On a stage stands a boy in school uniform, his hands poised over an electronic keyboard, playing at nothing. He's in the background, you see, and any tinkling of the keys would interrupt the lead actors' conversation. His job is merely to make it look like there are other kids in this school and that they do other things. And so he stands marooned from the scene around him, a breathing prop hesitating to honky-tonk. I don't know the young man's name, but I would like to gratefully applaud his moment of restraint, however absurd.

Because nobody else in Roshan Abbas' Always Kabhi Kabhi is EVER quiet. Yes, I used caps. Just like the film does as it screams at the eardrums , with a moronic background score that never stops overselling the moment. One of the many clumsy product-placement stops in this film really ought have been for earplugs. So yeah, Casio boy, you did good.

Like Glee but without (the incredible Jane Lynch or) kids who can actually sing, the only thing authentically high-school about this film is how amateurishly it comes together. Potentially interesting ideas -- taking the narrative forward through status updates, for example, as a character goes from 'heading to a club' to posting party pics to saying 'hangovers are hell', in a matter of seconds -- appear but are instantly smothered by the next scene.

In this particular case, while the girl in class nurses her hangover, the teacher leaves the classroom and students of Class XI, at the very least, start throwing chalk at one another. Several of them look uncomfortable doing so, tossing it casually and without motive, just because that's what school kids do, right?

Um, no. And therein lies the bigger problem here, the inherent condescension towards the target audience. Teen films almost invariably dial themselves down into bubblegummy pap, predictable and plastic. Maybe that's good business sense, since any teenager with half a brain never ever watches a teen flick, but this neglect towards intelligence is criminal. Plus, it programs pre-teens directly, grooming them into candyfloss. It's the Stepford genre, really.

The story? A boy who presumably wants to be Vivek Oberoi [ Images ] when he grows up, is smitten by the pretty new girl. Meanwhile his geeky best friend constantly swaps barbs with the resident firebrand. Oh, and everyone's parents are kinda evil. (The kids seem pretty villainous to me too, though, pointing and giggling when one of their classmates fails to get into MIT.)

Nobody's worth talking about except Zoa Mirani, playing the feisty one with significant charm. There's confidence and presence here, and this girl -- who nabs the only genuinely good shot in this film, a quick and wonderful visual flourish involving lipstick and suicide -- is the only positive takeaway.

The first half is dull as can be, merely loud, and while the emotionally-laden second half begins to mildly resemble something sweet, it explodes into a flashy climax that ruins everything.

And then the producer's husband comes and ruins it all over again.

Right after the climax we see the promotional music video for the film, a DJ'd up version of the song we JUST saw a minute ago (whoa), a 'you grownups don't understand us kids' song mouthed by a megastar in his 40s. Double whoa. And that isn't even the worst part. In this video, as kids wriggle around a weird jail kinda setup, a gigantic metal crate is lowered from the ceiling, ushered in by fireworks and dazzling lights. Inside is Shah Rukh Khan, the only surprise being the man footing the bill for the movie suddenly showing off his starriness, on a stage he's bought himself. Awk-warrrd. And say it with me, WHOA.

No wonder the film was not promoted. I hate to say this, Red Chillies did a pathetic job - actually it did nothing at all - when it came to promoting this film. Probably they knew this was bad, no, pathetic. Over the course of the past few months, there was not ONE occasion when I heard any of the film's songs over radio, however, I have heard the Bose D K song a thousand times easily. Now THAT's promotion. Bombard the audience. Even Bheja Fry 2 has had a fantastic promotion. The other big film in terms of promotion this week is Aftab's Bin Bulaaye Baraati. That has got noticed more than this film.

Either SRK's choice of films is BAD, or he has terrible terrible guys in his production unit who have misguided him.

I don't feel sorry for SRK. The blame for taking part in trash like Dulha Mil Gaya, Billu, Always Kabhi Kabhi, Zor Ka Jhatka lay squarely on him. One can blame the production staff and other factors only so much before the guy at the top has to take some responsibility. Even if he wanted to launch Zoa as a favor, he could have found a better film and given her some part in it. AKK was looking like a stinker way before the reviews came out. So many people were making fun of things like 'undi the condi.'

The worst part of it all is how visible SRK is in these films. In Billu, he was all over the promos and for promotion even though it was really a film starring Irfan Khan. For AKK, he was at so many functions, in the theatrical trailer and doing a silly item song for no reason. It would bring him much less criticism if he produced a tiny film and just let it do what it can on it's own without getting visibly involved and disappointing audiences.

Masand: 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' is boring

Cast: Zoa Morani, Ali Fazal, Giselle Monteiro, Lillete Dubey, Satyajeet Dubey, Ali Fazal

Director: Roshan Abbas

Set on a sprawling Delhi campus where students spend the bulk of their time attending drama rehearsals or dancing merrily in the corridors, 'Always Kabhi Kabhi' directed by Roshan Abbas channels those breezy 'High School Musical' movies…but alas this film doesn't have the infectious charm of those feel-good Disney entertainers.

The kids in this film are your usual stereotypes: you have the resident nerd (played by Satyajeet Dubey), the firebrand (played by Zoa Morani), the charmer (played by Ali Fazal), and the pretty new head-turner (played by Giselle Monteiro). There's little by way of plot here - the school's putting up a production of Romeo & Juliet, and our four leads sign up for assorted duties. Alongside we get a glimpse of their troubled home lives. The nerd is under pressure from his overbearing father to get admission into MIT, the short-tempered, snappy one longs for the attention of her busy parents, the pretty one is being bullied into realizing her mother's unfulfilled dreams, and Mr Popular has a strained relationship with his worrying father.

Much in the same sloppy vein as 'Faltu' recently, the larger theme that's addressed here is the lack of communication between adults and their children. Pretty much all parents are painted as villains, while teenagers are dubbed the misunderstood generation. Some of this might have worked if the characters or their situations felt authentic. But very little feels real or relatable in this film, aside from the sporadic use of status updates to take the narrative forward, and the exasperation of parents watching their kids spend so much time texting.

The real problem is that the film neither feels accurately representative of this generation and its lifestyle, nor does it have an aspirational quality to it like those campus portions of 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' did all those years ago. As a result it feels very boring, and a closing-credits item-song featuring Shah Rukh Khan doesn't redeem it in any way.

Of the cast, Ali Fazal has a likeable presence, and Zoa Morani is blessed with abundant confidence. The clumsy script however, which throws in everything from a teenage pregnancy scare to a drugs bust, is limp to say the least despite the involvement of four writers.

I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Roshan Abbas' 'Always Kabhi Kabhi'. Watching this film is like attending a concert put up by ten-year-olds. It's amateurish, and tedious to sit through, and the only thing you can appreciate in the end is the earnestness behind the effort.

Rating: 1.5 /5

It is ok, If the film is not good...It deserves such reviews. Thats fair.

Having said that, Shah Rukh as a producer did some really really great films: Asoka and Paheli for me are classic;Great bold thoughts and acting behind them and It still sadden me that they didn't do well. PPDHH is so damn awesome and fun and how they made fun of the media is so true. MHN and OSO were very nice entertainment, CC I just love it...His role was like a real husband love his wife but he is full of flaws!

Billu I never thought I will like it but I did, though i don't put it among others films thats for sure.

So, other than this film that doesn't deserve his money and attention at all and maybe maybe I can understand what you all talking about regarding Billu, I see he is doing a good job as a producer mixing art films with commercial...So it is unfair to say otherwise even with those films didn't do well. Just unfair.

^ I liked most of his productions but he should have kept the budget in line with what he could expect from BO returns. He spent far too much money for them to be profitable, case in point: Billu .

You have a point in that I agree.

I think the fact he did some really good films in the past and didn't do well hit him and left him confuse of what to correct if he wants to do again films with initially good story like Billu, so he went all the way with it. Sometimes there is nothing wrong in a film, it just didn't click with the people at that point of time. I think he needs to be more confident of what he is doing and doesn't bother much about what people accept from him in terms of commercial success and just follow his heart. And yeah give every film what its need…

So sad...I feel bad for SRK.

I dont' think word of mouth is good either. A couple people I know in India who've seen it said it was a 'bakwas' (ie rubbish) movie.
So it's not just the reviews unfortunately.

Interesting that Ready's reviews were every bit as bad, but look what it's doing... :P
yeah that makes me mad.
But I suppose its a very different type of movie, so still attracts a huge audience. This isn't engaging for audience or critics.

It rarely is about the critics. In fact, it never is. Audience reaction is what is important, and the audience itself is missing.

I in any way won't understand your groans. The new director, absolutely new actors, no star name. Hardly from a film it was possible to expect an enchanting spectacle.

Komal Nahta has given the credit to new actors and the director, and you have given all up as a bad job. With such spectators to any new actors not to make the way at cinema.

^ If you read our posts again carefully, you'll see that we've only been commenting on the business aspect of the film, which is all that matters here as SRK is producing it. Be assured that we are all sorry that this is going to turn out as another loser at the Box Office.

Always Kabhi Kabhi was poor on day one with around 30 lakhs nett on day one. The film collected very poorly at multiplexes all over. It will be near impossible for the film to do anything at the box office unless it shows miraculous turnaround.

I saw the movie today. The movie had nothing new to offer. The story was not going in a particular direction. There was no excitement for the climax. By the time SRK appeared in the end credits (which I was waiting for) only I was there in the theatre along with my friend who was dragging me out to leave the theatre.

First Day First Show. I thought the reactions would be more negative.

‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ is a story of four unique lives trying to compete with the pressures of growing up and the firsts we all experience in school. From crushes to classes, from bunking to break-ups. A modern age Romeo named Sameer (Ali Fazal) whose biggest theory of living life is through shortcuts. Who has eyes only for his Juliet, this dreamy eyed girl called Aishwarya Dhawan (Giselle Monteiro) who is a new admission in school. Aish leads a life, which is lived by her; but designed by her mother.

Tariq (Satyajeet Dubey) is Sam's best friend and the geek who has the cheek to be cool but carries the burden of having to excel at everything. His sole ambition is to study and to try staying out of Nadini's way.

Nandini (Zoa Morani) is the school brat; who you love to hate and hate to love. Living life on her terms and breaking rules to make her own makes Nandini; the most envied girl in school and no one agrees to that more than Tariq.

It's the final year at St. Marks, and they begin with a lot of excitement. Principal Khan and Ms. Das have decided that the school was going to participate in the interschool ‘Shakespearewallah’ contest and present Romeo and Juliet!.

The story then unfolds a series of dramatic incidents that take place in each of these characters’ lives and how they find the answers to each question on a youthful journey together where life has many lessons for these carefree souls. But to the questions which life throws at them, they have only one answer "Kabhi Kabhi Jo Dil Kahe, Always Wohi Karein".

First time director Roshan Abbas comes up with a fresh concept; but he and his team of writers (Ranjita Raina and Ishita Moitra) somehow are not able to showcase it with full conviction. While the first half has light moments, the graph escalates towards the second half. Dialogues are dipped in youth flavor, but while some of them try to sound ‘cool’ (if that was the intension behind it); they aren’t. On the acting front, newcomer Ali Fazal is plain mediocre and also needs to work on his looks. Giselle Monterio is expressionless and should take a crash course on acting. Zoa Morani is at least confident; but again is no heroine material. Satyajeet Dubey is the best of the lot with his boy-next-door looks and a likeable performance. No great shakes though.

The other cast includes Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey, Mukesh Tiwari, Manoj Joshi, Akash Khurana, Navneet Nishan whose roles aren’t well defined and hence does not leave any impact whatsoever. Vijay Raaz is wasted.

Music by Ashish Rego, Shree D and Pritam Chakraborty has no repeat value (except the title song) which is a ‘must’ for a film with romance as it’s backdrop. Even the ‘Antenna’ song filmed on Shahrukh Khan is not tuneful. Editing by Sanjay Sharma is of standard. Cinematography by Fuwad Khan and Anshuman Mahaley is of top order. Art directors Mansi Mehta and Tanushree Sarkar succeed in capturing a vibrant ambience and a colourful atmosphere. Pack your bags. Brace yourself. It's time to re-visit your school!

One common thread across most reviews is that it is an earnest attempt, and that performances, particularly that of Zoa Morani, are good

Yes, Performances by the all of the four were very good and Zoa's was the best. She acted like she has been acting for years.
