JAVA - do I need it?

this may not be the correct place to ask, but I keep getting a message asking to update Java... what is it? do I need to update? what if I don't? are there any drawbacks to having/not having/not updating?

I think you do need to update, many websites (and some applications) use Java and if you don´t update, you might not be able to open a lot of websites

It's a programming language. Some websites use it, and if it's out of date those won't show up properly. There's no harm in having it, go ahead and update.

so it seems there are no problems with updating it? I guess if I have it already, updating can't hurt. I know animations are still not working on my PC after I save them. Would this update help that?
